A lot depended on tonight’s match – the final one of the season in the main league. It was the decider as to who came third in Division 3. That is: who was to be the Top Loser who could brag that they only just missed out on promotion, and who would come in a mid-table fourth.
We went into the match standing 3rd in the table a point ahead of Pudsey B, our opponents tonight. We only needed a draw to stay ahead of them. No-one else could touch us.
We lost, alas. But with honour. Pudsey’s top 3 boards averaged 154. Ours: 113. All the team fought hard but could not withstand the steamroller. The final score: Them: 4½. Us: ½.
So we finish 4th out of 8 in Division 3 in just our 2nd season of existence, three places higher than last year. That is something we can be proud of – and a good augury for next season.
