Round 6 – sharp edges

8 January 2020

It was Round 6 of the main league tonight and all four of our teams were playing.

The results:
Team A lost at home to Leeds A by 3½ tp 1½.
Team B won away at Harrogate by 3 to 2.
Team C lost away to Pudsey B by 4 to 1.
Team C lost at home at Alwoodley E by 4½ to ½.

The bright spots:
Team B’s win at Harrogate keeps them in hot contention for promotion, alongside the other top teams Harrogate and Pudsey B. Though outgraded at 4 of the 5 boards they chalked up wins by John Grasham and Chris Tatham and draws from Kevin Plaxton and Howard Brears.

Team C’s two top boards were outgraded by a combined total of 112 points. Yet Ian Carrigan (113) drew against a 170-grader and Philip May (94) drew against a 149 grade. Analysis software shows that both had the better game against their opponents.

In Team D, Paul Smith’s draw once again saved his team from complete wipeout.

The hours of daylight are getting longer. And the Chinese New Year starts on 25 January.
