Our 3 league teams were all in action tonight. And the result? One of each: 1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss. We like a bit of variety, which sounds like the cue for a music hall song but isn’t.
In Division 2, our ‘A’ Team scored an emphatic 4 – 1 victory (3 wins and 2 draws) over a University team that included grades up to 173 as well as total newcomers whose abilities could be anybody’s guess. Our team comprised Paul Johnson, Paul May, Steven Whitehead, Bob Maltby and Eric Brodie.
The win keeps the team in second place in the Division, just 1 point behind Rose Forgrove B and a whole 4 points ahead of the University and Leeds B teams.
In Division 3, Team B achieved a very creditable draw against a generally stronger Alwoodley team. With the score standing at 2-all, everything depended on the last game to finish, where Phil Higgins (86) was playing Paul Hardy (101) in a long, evenly-balanced battle. With neither being able to find a way of breaking through they eventually agreed a draw – which drew the match and secured a valuable league point for the team.
Team C were at home to Rose Forgrove E. They were the underdogs in terms of grade and it showed in the final results. Man of the Match here was Paul Smith (grade 30) who gained his first score of the season with a draw against Jim Bird. Jim is a very experienced player with a grade this year of 96 so Paul clearly played very well to extract a good result.
Paul’s was the team’s only ‘over-the-board’ score. The team’s other point came from a default win at board 5.
