Navigating the Rapids

3 October 2018

Tonight was the very first outing for our newly-formed Rapidplay team.  To record it for posterity, the founder members were:

  • Tom Leah
  • Paul May
  • Robert Moneagle.

Now it is not every day that one of our club plays a Spanish Grandmaster with a grade of  228.  But that is what happened to Tom Leah.  Grade difference a mere 59 – or 76 if you use the YCA Rapidplay figures.  Refusing to be overawed, our Tom gave the maestro “a couple of good games”, as team captain Paul described it.
(In the Rapidplay League matches the teams play 2 games against the same opponent.)

Paul and Robert faced rather smaller grade deficits in their games.  Robert won one of his while Paul managed a draw.

Our 2 Mini League teams were also in action.  They both scored well on handicap points.  Team M1, facing an average grade deficit of 46, ended with 2 points and team M2 (average grade deficit 21) with 1½.
