Both our 3-player teams won convincingly in the first round of the new season’s Mini League.
Our first mini team, M1, playing against Rose Forgove M5, won two games and drew 1.
And so did our second team, M2, playing Alwoodley M2.
When handicap points are added in, the first team won by 3½ points to 1½. And our second team won by 4 points to 1.
Three results ran against the grain of the gradings:
~ on Team M1, our Steve Hodgson (42) beat Andrew Parker (64);
~ on Team M2, our Barry Fulthorpe (84) forced a draw against Paul Hardy (107), and John Light (85) gave Paul Gelder (129) such problems that the poor guy ran out of time.
A fabulous set of results!
It was all a far cry from the situation of the previous week when we were desperately trying to fill our two 5-player teams. As Queen Victoria famously said, “A week is a long time in chess”.
