The 4NCL congress at Harrogate this weekend was well-supported by Limewood players, with 6 of our number taking part.
The May family produced the best results. In the Major, Paul progressed from a starting rank of 30th out of 58 to a final position of joint 5th. Four of his 5 games were against opponents with FIDE ratings of 1925 or higher compared with Paul’s 1797 but he ended with 3 wins and a draw, giving him a congress performance rating of 2039 and a score just half a point off the prize money.
In the Minor, where ECF grades ranged up to 134. Philip’s opponents were all graded more than 20 points higher than his relatively modest 98. But he beat a 120-grader and drew against grades of 119, 122 and 130. His only loss was against a 134-grade.
Just what did the May family put in their breakfast coffee that weekend?
