Appleby: Limeys win more games

22 February 2017
Seven Limewood members took part in the 3rd round of the ‘Individuals’ competition and 4 of them won their games.

In the (open) Ellis Trophy, Paul May pulled out all the stops to defeat the redoubtable Clive Davies (graded 17 points higher than Paul).  Clive put Paul under early pressure but over-reached himself in his attack.  Paul then seized the initiative and finished the game in brilliant style.

You can view Paul’s game here.

In the Appleby Trophy (under 135 grade), star of our show was John Light who overcame a grading gap of 37 points to win against Tom Devlin in a long game.   Our John went home a very happy man.

Other wins were achieved by Philip May over fellow club-member Chris Tatham – that game can be viewed in our Instructive Games (members-only) section – and by Alan Riddle, who defeated the up-&-coming Sam Playford.

Our other 2 members, Barry and Steve, faced massive challenges (grading gaps of 49 and 69 points respectively) which proved too great to surmount.

The next round of the Ellis and Appleby will be on 5 April.
